Newborn Photography FAQS

When Do I Book?

You can book at any time during your pregnancy, but the sooner the better so I can ensure you are booked into my schedule and we can have our pre consultation.  As mentioned above - baby is in charge and inevitably will arrive when they want to, so I do build in some flexibility with photo session dates.  Ideally the photo session should be scheduled for between 5-14 days post birth, so baby will have established a feeding pattern, but still be very sleepy so we can achieve those beautiful curled up poses.

Prior To The Photography Session

There are a few things you can do prior to the photo session which may help us get the most out of our time and ensure baby is comfortable and happy.  Happy baby = great photographs!
Location - If we are having the photo session in your home please ensure the space is clean and clutter free.
Food (especially if breast-feeding) - Some foods may react with baby’s digestive system so it would be best to avoid these for 2 days prior to the photo session (this is not an exhaustive list):
Acidic foods, such as lemons, oranges, berries, pizza, spaghetti, chilli and tomato products
Gassy vegetables, such as asparagus, garlic, onions, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower
Activity - We need baby as relaxed and sleepy as possible so try and keep baby active and awake for the 1-2 hours prior to the photo session.
Feed - One of the best ways to relax baby is to ensure they have a nice full tummy.  So make sure you feed baby no more than 15 minutes prior to the session.
Warmth - If we are holding the photo session at your home please ensure that the house is nice and warm.  We recommend 85 degrees, as baby will be naked during the photo session.  Babies lose body temperature very quickly and it is important the location is kept at a stable, warm temperature.  If you are coming to the studio baby should be wearing a nappy and wrapped in blankets to keep warm.  We would advise those attending the session to dress in layers, as it can become hot!

What To Wear

Baby - For the majority of the photo session baby will be naked.  I have a number of props and outfits for newborns to wear during their photo session.  However, if there is a special prop or ‘look’ you would particularly like to have I would be happy to discuss this with you prior to the photo session so I can ensure my colour combinations are complimentary.
Parents/Siblings - We would recommend that outfits for parents/siblings are kept to neutral colours and black/white.  We would also recommend that outfits do not have logos, strong prints and that colours compliment eachother.

What Do I Need To Bring?

For Baby - Bring enough milk for extra feeds if you bottle feed and your usual wipes and nappy supply.
Snacks/Drinks - We are happy to provide tea/coffee and water, but would advise you to bring any snacks or specific drinks you would like with you, especially if you have baby’s siblings with you.
Entertainment - Please bring plenty of quiet entertainment for siblings.  Tablets or portable DVD with headphones work well.
Dummies/Pacifiers - Please bring a couple with you, as they are ideal for the purpose of keeping baby settled for the few hours we have them to get that beautiful image.  Please be assured that babies do not get attached to them after our session nor do they cause nipple confusion as it is for such a short period of time.

What Can I Expect At My Newborn Photography Session?

Baby will have a poo or a wee!  This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.  All of our props are washed prior to every use in non bio detergent and we always make sure we have backups!
Baby will cry.  Again, this is completely normal, what is important is that the atmosphere remain calm and soothing for baby and parents, so try and relax as much as possible.   In the event that baby becomes too distressed then we will halt the photo session and reschedule for another day.

Siblings should be photographed during the first hour of the session.  After this arrangements should be made to take them home or take them out for a walk or a play in the park whilst the rest of the session continues.  This is to ensure the smooth running of the session and to make sure we can concentrate the remainder of the session on capturing those precious memories of your newborn.

Most Importantly!  Relax and enjoy this special time with your child!
