Those first precious days with your little one… They’re absolutely magical, aren’t they? But they’re also gone in the blink of an eye! One minute you’re counting their tiny toes in the hospital, and the next they’re rolling over and giving you cheeky grins.
As Nottingham’s newborn photographer, with over 10 years experience, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard parents say, “I wish we’d captured more of those early days…. but….”(insert reason – tiredness, baby unsettled, didn’t know if I could cope, I still have pregnancy weight, can I bring siblings (YES) etc).
That’s why I’m writing this guide – to walk you through exactly what happens at one of my newborn photoshoots. “They never sleep when I want them to!”
Ah yes, the classic newborn sleep schedule – wide awake at 3 AM and sound asleep during family visits! But here’s the thing: at my Nottingham photography studio, I’m a bit like the baby whisperer (minus the magic wand, sadly). My specialised newborn photography studio is specifically designed to encourage that milk-drunk sleepiness babies love. Warm temperature? Check. White noise? Check. Cosy wraps? Double check. And if your little one decides to stay awake? Well, those alert newborn expressions and tiny yawns make for equally gorgeous newborn photographs!
“I’m exhausted – will I look terrible in the photos?”
First off, let me tell you a secret – you’re absolutely glowing. No, really! That “new parent” look? It’s beautiful. But I also understand that 3 AM feeds don’t exactly leave you feeling red-carpet ready. That’s why, as an experienced photographer, I’ve got all sorts of tricks up my sleeve for parent photos. Perfect lighting? Got it. Flattering angles? My specialty. And if you’ve got a bit of baby sick on your shoulder? That’s what editing is for! (Though I draw the line at photoshopping in eight hours of sleep – some things are beyond even my abilities! 😉)
Can I bring Siblings/Grandparents?
The short answer is YES! And if this is what you would like then we can talk about it more during your pre session consultation, as it can mean some adjustments need to be made. My sessions are all about LOVE and they are a time I want you to remember fondly… and sometimes with a laugh… because well, we are working with babies and sometimes things happen… that need a change of clothes! HINT: bring a change of clothes!
Is my baby too old?
Sometimes it just isn’t possible to come within the first few weeks post birth. I completely understand that. I never pressure parents to come by a set date for their baby’s photoshoot. My poses and techniques are designed to create beautiful images whether your baby is a sleepy newborn or a curious, arm waving, leg kicking baby. Yes, it becomes more about the expression and connections between you and your baby, rather than sleepy curled up newborns…. but each is equally as enchanting.

What to Expect at Your Nottingham Newborn Photography Session
The Warm Welcome
When you arrive at my cosy Nottingham photography studio, you’ll find it’s lovely and warm (like a toasty tropical day warm – babies love it, parents… bring layers you can remove). There’s comfortable seating for feeding and most importantly, a hot brew waiting for you. Because let’s be honest, what new parent doesn’t need caffeine?
The Settling-In Period
Your little one will likely need a feed and a cuddle when you arrive. This is perfect! It gives us time to chat about any specific poses or props you’d love to include, and it helps everyone relax into the session. No rushing here – we work on baby time!
The Photography Magic
Once your little one is content (and hopefully drowsy), we’ll start with some simple, natural poses. If there are older siblings they are always where I start, because these are usually the most valued photographs for parents.
We then move onto combinations of family images, all with a relaxed and natural feel. There is also plenty of chats, laughs and breaks as and when they are needed.
We wind the session down with the star of the show’s solo photographs, whether in props, posed, clothed or au natural.
Safety is always my top priority, so every pose is carefully supported and monitored. Your baby is always in charge of the session and if they are not happy in a pose then we won’t do it, I am very baby aware and led in my approach.
I aim to capture:

- Tiny details (those miniature fingers and toes!)
- Family portraits if you’d like them
- Sibling shots (if applicable)
