Everything You Need To Know: Family photoshoots with your dog in Nottingham - Pet-Friendly Family Photography With Fairy Nuff Photography

This is my complete guide to family photoshoots with your dog and kids in Nottingham.   With over a decade of experience and many delighted clients, these are my top tips for dog and children friendly photography sessions.

Whether you’re based in Nottingham, Derby, or anywhere across our beautiful counties, outdoor family photography offers stunning backdrops and endless possibilities – once you know how to wrangle everyone involved!  Or you may prefer the comfort of my boutiques studio, in the heart of Nottingham.  With parking provided and an accessible, private site it is a really convenient and comfortable option for many clients.

“Can we bring our dog to our photoshoot?” "YES!"

Why Choose an Outdoor Family Photoshoot With Your Dog?

Let’s be honest: You wouldn’t be the first person to break out in a cold sweat, thinking about your toddler who thinks sitting still is a form of medieval torture in a clean studio filled with expensive equipment.  Then add in a dog (or two) who’s convinced the camera is some sort of treat dispenser…

Although there is really nothing to worry about, as after 10 years of experience with little ones and furry friends I have pretty much seen it all, still delivered a stunning gallery of images and my studio is very much still standing!  However, outdoor family photoshoots with dogs do have distinct advantages:

Outdoor family photoshoots give everyone space to be themselves, which typically results in those genuine, unguarded moments that make the best photographs.

Kids and dogs love the freedom and adventure of the great outdoors!  Being together in nature means smiles are pretty much guaranteed!

Plus, the scenery in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire is absolutely gorgeous. From ancient forests to tranquil lakes, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic locations.

The Art of Bribery: What to Bring for Kids and Dogs

Every successful family photoshoot relies heavily on strategic bribery. No, it doesn’t make you a bad parent/dog owner, just a prepared and realistic one!  Here’s your essential kit:

For children:

  • Their favourite small toy or comfort object (but maybe leave the 4-foot teddy bear at home)
  • Healthy snacks that won’t stain faces or clothes
  • Wet wipes (the universal parenting solution)
  • A change of clothes, because Murphy’s Law applies especially to clean outfits
  • Bubbles or a small ball for action shots and favourite books to read together for genuine smiles

For dogs:

  • High-value treats they don’t usually get (cheese, small pieces of cooked chicken, or special training treats)
  • Their favourite toy for relaxed, natural poses
  • A squeaky toy for getting their attention and those adorable head tilts
  • A towel in case they decide to investigate every muddy puddle en route

Your Family Photoshoot Survival Kit

Beyond the bribery supplies, here’s what to pack for a stress-free session:

The practical stuff:

  • Portable phone charger (for emergency entertainment and communication)
  • Tissues and wet wipes in industrial quantities
  • Hairbrush and hair ties
  • Safety pins for wardrobe emergencies
  • Insect repellent for summer shoots
  • Sunscreen (even on cloudy days)
  • Blanket for sitting/comfort breaks

The sanity-saving extras:

  • Backup car snacks (for the journey home when everyone’s exhausted)
  • Entertainment for waiting siblings
  • A sense of humour (absolutely essential)
  • Realistic expectations (perfect family photos are a myth and that’s what makes them beautiful)

Seasonal Styling: Looking Good Whatever the Weather

The key to great family photoshoot outfits is coordination without looking exactly the same.  Here’s how to nail it across the seasons:

  • Spring (March-May): Think soft pastels and light layers. Denim, jackets, cardigans, and light jumpers work brilliantly against fresh green backdrops. Avoid anything too heavy – British spring weather is notoriously unpredictable, and you don’t want everyone sweating through their carefully chosen outfits.
  • Summer (June-August): Light, breathable fabrics are your friend. Linen shirts, cotton dresses, and chino shorts photograph beautifully. Stick to lighter colours that won’t absorb heat, but avoid pure white (it can wash out in bright sunlight).
  • Autumn (September-November): This is golden hour territory for outdoor family photoshoots. Rich colours like burgundy, navy, forest green, and burnt orange complement autumn foliage perfectly. Cosy knits, boots, and scarves add texture and warmth.
  • Winter (December-February): Embrace the chill with chunky knits, warm coats, and boots. Darker colours work well against winter landscapes, but don’t be afraid of a pop of colour – a bright red coat or scarf can create stunning contrast against bare trees or snow.

Universal styling tips:

  • Avoid busy patterns and logos
  • Make sure clothes are well fitting, clean and ironed
  • Choose clothes everyone feels comfortable in (uncomfortable kids = grumpy photos)
  • Bring backup options, especially for children prone to wardrobe malfunctions
  • Treat your pet to a trip to the dog groomer before your session to make sure they look as great as the rest of the family do!

Making the Most of Your Session

The secret to a successful family photoshoot with your dog isn’t perfect poses – it’s capturing your family’s genuine personality. The best photos often happen between the formal shots when everyone’s relaxed and being themselves.

Don’t stress if someone has a meltdown, the dog decides to chase a squirrel mid-shot, or the weather doesn’t cooperate.  I can assure you I have seen it all before, especially as a Mum to an active, big personality child, who NEVER sits still and an equally as excitable border collie!

This is where that patience and sense of humour I mentioned earlier are used to calmly defuse all situations and help everyone relax and enjoy themselves!

Safety First: Keeping Everyone Happy and Healthy

Safety is always a priority in all of my sessions, whether in my studio or outdoors.  I carefully select my locations to be child and dog friendly and if we are going to a new location I will always try to visit it prior to the session.

For the little ones:

  • Ensure children have been well fed before the session and have plenty of water with you
  • Bring a basic first aid kit (antiseptic cream and plasters are like magic for minor scrapes)
  • Bring spare nappies, wipes, muslins

For your furry friend:

  • Ensure dogs are up to date with vaccinations and flea/tick prevention
  • Bring plenty of water and a portable bowl
  • Keep them on a lead near roads or wildlife areas
  • Pack waste bags (nobody wants to remember your session for the wrong reasons)
  • Consider the temperature – hot tarmac can burn paw pads, and some breeds struggle in heat
